Demolition A - West, Frankfurt airport

In order to maintain its position as one of Europe's most important airports, Frankfurt airport's infrastructure needs to grow to meet increasing requirements. The new plans focus on a new runway, a new terminal, a maintenance hangar for the wide-body A380 as well as a remodelling of terminal 1.

Fraport charged ARCADIS with the planning services for the clearing of the construction site west of terminal 1. The new gate area A0 for handling both passengers and baggage is to be built in this area. The clearing of the site also includes the planning of and tender for the demolition of more than 20 buildings as well as of some traffic and ramp areas. The dismantling and demolition of all buildings (about 950,000 m³ of building volume) is to be completed by 2008. Airport-specific matters such as maintaining regular air traffic and observing different security questions need to be taken into consideration. Furthermore, the works also include the remediation of contaminated building materials such as asbestos and PCB-containing materials, which had to be included in the planning. The most challenging building to be demolished is hangar 3, a building which is about 170 metres long and 130 metres wide. The building was blasted in mid-2007.
