Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant - Unit 4

As a result of the accident in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant-Unit 4 on 26 April 1986, the core of the reactor, and its protective safety barriers and safety systems were destroyed, the nuclear fuel inside lost its properties and became radioactive waste. Following the accident, a temporary shelter was constructed over the destroyed central hall of the Unit 4.

In 1996, an international Group of Experts, including experts from Ukraine, Russia, European Union, USA and Japan elaborated an EU-Tacis initiated study of alternative solutions to convert the Chernobyl Unit 4 and its present shelter (Ukritiye) into an environmentally safe condition. This study used the results from a previous Tacis-funded study on the containment of the present “Ukritiye” as well as US contributions funded by the Department of Energy to recomend Short and Long Term Measures.

After a process of discussions between the G7 Nuclear Safety Working Group (G7-NSWG) and representatives of the Government of Ukraine, it was decided that an integrated
Shelter Implementation Plan (SIP) should be developed under G7 sponsorship.
